Fall harvest

(To the tune of Frere Jacques)

Watermelon, watermelon

See it drip, see it drip

Up and down your elbows, up and down your elbows

Spit the pits, spit the pits

We also grew a cantaloupe (or as the Aussies say, a rock melon) that produced really well. We had almost 2 dozen melons ripening all at the same time. We couldn’t keep up with them. Luckily the chickens love buggy melon.

Peter planted a mini-cornfield in the front yard in July. We harvested in late September. The ears were strangely stubby and not sweet.

Peter was very disappointed. It’s hard to get sweet corn in SoCal. We’ll try again next year!

Simon’s first rainbow (and lightening and thunder and Rain!)

Peter and Simon were watering the front yard cornfield Saturday evening when they spotted a rainbow.

Simon's rainbow

It’s always hard to capture such a phenomena with a camera. It was very bright, arced over the hill up the street and even was a double for a moment. But no one cried.

brilliant colors

I don’t think Simon could see the rainbow. He seemed more interested in the spectacular sunset out back — the dark shapes of the trees, utility poles and buildings against the bright sky.

Then the sky turned ominous red and thunder rolled. We saw a couple bolts of lightning over Highland Park. Later during a late night feeding session, I heard rain falling. It was just a few drops. That’s something we get excited about here in Southern California. Usually we don’t get a drop from May to October so I thought Simon would have to wait until Fall to learn about precipitation. Poor kid.

I miss summer thunderstorms on the East Coast. Poor me!

Best home-grown baby present

Simon has received some exquisite hand-knit gifts, a hand-assembled straw star sculpture and lots of other adorable presents.

But this one, from Peter’s friend in Colorado, stands alone. Maybe Nate was just showing off his alliums, but it came all the way from Boulder in a box addressed to Simon Oscar Stemwedel.

Simon met his Grandparents last Saturday.  We’ll post a photo retrospective after they leave us to visit more northerly grandchildren this weekend but here’s a taste:

The Squash That Ate Los Angeles

Posted in H. sapiens var. Simon, Vegetables on August 10th, 2011 by Peter – 2 Comments

Not the city.  The county.

We were hoping to feed him these squash as he starts solid food.  With a typical baby-sized serving it should take twelve years to get through them.
